Earlier this week, we reported on Nexii Building Solutions, a Canadian startup which The New York Times described as a “rising star” in prefabricated modular construction. The company’s $1 billion valuation, combined with the $155 million it has raised through funding rounds, demonstrates the surging interest in modular design as a tool in tackling housing affordability and carbon emissions.
Innovations in modular design have also featured heavily in our editorial throughout 2022, whether through an architectural kit-of-parts for public cultural venues, modular refugee shelters for those displaced by war in Ukraine, or office buildings that can be taken apart and reassembled in new locations.
In 2021, we dedicated a full feature article to the subject. The piece, titled For Affordable Housing, The Revolution Will Be Modularized, explored one architect’s vision for an industrial-scale solution to the affordable housing crisis; one which centered on shipping-container-sized modules configured as various combinations of housing options.
While some modular projects are produced by general practitioners incorporating the method on a case-by-case basis, other firms have established dedicated modular divisions to further exploit the potential of modular systems.
To explore this phenomenon, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to focus on Colorado/Idaho-based EVstudio. The studio is currently hiring architects for their exclusive Modular Studio, with positions available in both Denver, Colorado, and Meridian, Idaho.
New recruits will work within the Modular Studio which supports the modular design process from planning and entitlements through to manufacturing support. While no prior experience in modular design is required for the roles, the firm is eager to hear from candidates with experience in manufacturing or offsite construction.
“Not only do we specialize in the creation of modular buildings, but we know how to determine if land is optimal for fostering a particular development program,” the firm says. “When the architect understands the guidelines of the engineering that takes place in the factory, there's virtually no limit to the design styles you can build with modular construction.”
EVstudio is not the first modular innovator to be featured in our Job Highlights series. Back in April, we explored an opportunity for a Junior Architectral Designer role at Los Angeles-based Connect Homes, who combine an industrial, modular, customizable approach to homebuilding with a step-by-step digital-first process for clients, similar to other disruptors seen on Archinect such as Nabr and HOKO.
