Amid rising costs for materials, labor and nearly everything else, a few creative entrepreneurs in Detroit have been trying nontraditional building methods to make housing more affordable in Michigan.

It's too early to tell whether any of these newer approaches — 3D printing, shipping containers, tiny homes — can be replicated at a large enough scale to significantly lower costs for entry-level housing in Detroit and across the state.
